6 Striking Looks for the 2024 People’s Choice Awards

The People’s Choice Awards are often one of the most entertaining red carpets of the year. At a ceremony voted for by the public rather than critics or industry bodies, attendees arrive on a near-hysterical “fan walk” down the red carpet surrounded by the public, with celebrities often opting for bold, eye-catching looks.

In a rare clash of red carpet calendars, the 2024 PCAs were held on the same night as the BAFTAs, the British film industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. As a result, several major nominees (and subsequent winners) showed up across the pond on Sunday, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Ayo Edbiri.

But that didn’t stop attendees from showing up in style. While London’s show presented elegant but relatively minimalist fashion (after all, the British royal family was in attendance), Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar welcomed an array of bright colors, exaggerated silhouettes and fun accessories.

Here are 6 of the most talked about looks of the night.

Laverne Cox always brought the drama on the red carpet, and so did the late fashion designer Thierry Mugler. It’s a pairing we’ve seen many times before, but that didn’t detract from the “Women’s Prison” star’s look, a 1987 Thierry Mugler velvet corset from her own personal archives, featuring a wingtip neckline, worn with matching opera gloves.

It was paired with a crystal-encrusted Giuseppe Di Morabito sheer train, which gave the look a fluid look as Cox hosted the evening’s pre-show coverage on the red carpet.

Ice Spice showcased one of the most colorful looks of the night, wearing a burnt-orange Dolce & Gabbana dress that complemented the aquamarine awards backdrop and her signature coppery curls.

The deep V faux fur collar of her custom-made gown revealed a satin bra top underneath, while sheer lace detailing allowed the rapper to show off more of her playful leopard print bodice. Ice Spice, who went on to win Newcomer of the Year, completed the look with heeled sandals and Le Vian jewelry.

Few celebrities can pull off wearing a sweater undershirt with a shirt and tie on the red carpet. But Billie Eilish did just that on her way to winning the acting award, TV Performance of the Year, for her performance in Swarm.

The singer paired her characteristically loose, alternative look with big sneakers and rimless glasses.

Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue’s dress looked like a glamorous emerald green candy wrapper. As Raisa Vanessa walked the red carpet in a pair of Christian Louboutin sandals, the waist of this sparkling strapless gown cinched in and the ruffles took on an almost geometric appearance.

Later in the ceremony, Milo changed outfits (to a sleek red color) to perform her hit song “Padam Padam”.

“Cowboycore” is all the rage, thanks in part to BeyoncĂ©’s growing love of leather boots and Stetsons. Markell Washington doubled down – or more like quadrupled down – on the trend Sunday night.

The TikTok star paired his cowboy cowboy hat with a floor-length skirt that appeared to be made of multiple pairs of jeans. He then wrapped his torso in a metal buckle belt (and accessorized his wrists and hat with two other belts) to add some style to the look.

Floral prints and details were back in vogue on the red carpet this awards season. Actress Xochitl Gomez put a sophisticated spin on the trend with her Gucci ensemble, which was adorned with a pair of pink fabric flowers on the shoulders and its jewel-encrusted sleeves that scalloped out to the elbows.

The 17-year-old, who was nominated in the Contestant of the Year category after winning Dancing with the Stars, completed the look with a pair of earrings and an elegant hairstyle.
