Old Hairstyles, New Fashion: JW Anderson Brings a New Twist to Nosy Neighbor Chic

Designer Jonathan Anderson says the style briefing for next season is all about channeling your busybody white-haired neighbor.

During London Fashion Week on Sunday, shortly after unveiling his latest collection for his brand JW Anderson, Anderson told a group of reporters he was intrigued by a nostalgic mood when thinking about women “doing laundry in their neighbor’s garden”.

But the Northern Irish designer’s take on this quintessential British scene is far from the prim and proper 1950s housewife. Salt-and-pepper wigs paired with striking red lips.

“We wanted to do something psychological this time,” he said. “Eccentric and pragmatic ideas.”

Oversized coats, layered knits, and ugly boots evoke an image of a woman dutifully hanging clothes on a line, one arm cradling a baby, the other gripping a cigarette.

“Somehow, young people are finding nostalgia,” he said. “Suddenly, a song from 50 years ago can top the charts.”

It’s hard to imagine the ’90s-obsessed Gen Z reenacting the mundane life of pre-internet Britain on TikTok, but clearly, we’re living in an era where everything old is refreshingly new again.
